Compression

Compressor is an effect for leveling out the dynamics of the sound. The purpose of the effect is to create a dynamically more even, louder sound. Typically it is used in mastering but also in individual instruments like guitar and vocals .
Multiband compressor
The purpose of this kind of compressor is, in addition to compressing the sound in general, to even out the spectrum of the sound by compressing specified frequency bands individually. This will add to the fullness of the sound.
Use of compressor
Compressor is a powerful tool, but with incorrect use, you could ruin your mix completely by trying to overdo it. A good way to learn about these problems is to overdo a mix and listen what happens. Most likely the mix will start sounding louder but also you will be able to hear the volume level "pumping", the "airyness" will degrade and also you can hear added distortion in the mix. Usual compression ratios for (todo: add different ratios for mastering, guitar, vocals)...
